Education Programmes — Discover Primary Science and Maths and Greenwave

Discover Primary Science and Maths (DPSM) is the national programme to foster interest in science and engineering among 8-12 year olds in primary schools. Participating schools carry out a range of hands-on science activities in the classroom and are also encouraged to undertake additional explorative activities and projects. Greenwave is a mass science experiment which facilitates primary schools across Ireland observing and submitting data on the arrival of spring to the project website to generate interactive maps. Students learn in a hands-on way about how species react to longer days and warmer temperatures, and can observe whether the “green wave” of spring moves from south to north across Ireland or inland from the coast to the centre of the country. As Education Specialist for these programmes we have inputs into strategy, programme development and evaluation. We have undertaken focus groups with teachers, recruited a network of Discover Centres offering science workshops, contributed content to the website and assessed the entries for the Award of Science and Maths Excellence.
